Floral Designs in Heirloom Quilt
2003 Imaginative placement of applique on a whole cloth background. The diagonal patterned quilting is interspersed with trapunto medallions. This heirloom quilt was inspired by a c.1840-1850 antique quilt shown in a 1974 McCall’s Needlework and Crafts magazine. It is all hand stitched. Red cockscomb flowers are celebrated here. A reverse applique technique was used, in which the red fabric on the flowers were cut into, to expose the fabric underneath. The red fabric was turned under to form the white finger like shapes, then sewn down with a blind stitch. All the other shapes were applied and blind stitched to the background fabric. The quilting (or stitching on top) within the leaves effectively forms the leaves’ veins and wonderful floral-shaped quilting is in the white background area as well.
Cockscomb won the President’s Choice Award in the 2003 Cape Cod Bayberry Quilters show.
