Uniquely American Quilts
1994 Completed in 1993, Baltimore Beauty Revisited is an example of how Frances used designs from early American quilts. This quilt includes designs from about 1843-1852 that were reproduced in the book Baltimore Beauties & Beyond by Elly Sienkiewicz. The many patterns were cut fabric pieces hand sewn onto a background fabric to depict the quilter’s favorite flowers, fruits and/or particular events. Different sewing techniques are celebrated in this quilt, including floral ruching and trapunto. Ruching is seen in the floral detail. Trapunto is the stuffing technique seen in the blueberries. Frances made this quilt in honor of she and her husband’s 50th wedding anniversary.
Baltimore Beauty Revisited won the Craftsmanship Award, “A Quilters’ Gathering” show in New England in 1994.
